Sparx Sharpening Instructions
Sharpening
- Turn on the Sharpener.
- Verify the installed grinding ring matches the grind requested for the skates.
- See the section below on Changing the Grinding Ring, if needed
- If these are Goalie Skates, install the orange risers.
- They snap into place with the pegs on the risers matching up with the holes on the skate jaws.
- Check the condition of the skate blade to estimate how many cycles to run the sharpening.
- Use the white stone to de-burr the skate blade edge. Use medium pressure with the stone at an angle to the edge to remove any burrs or large defects in the edge.
- Insert the skate onto the jaws by pushing down on the jaw control lever on the left of that machine, centering the skate blade left to right in the jaws, and the toe pointing to the right.
- Select the number of cycles needed based on your estimate.
- Press the start button to begin the cycle.
- Once the process is complete, Remove the skate and verify the edge’s are sharp and free of nicks or damage. Run additional cycles as needed to clean up the edges
- 10.If the blade edge is good, de-burr the edge using the soft red stone, with light/medium pressure with the shallower angle to the edge and followup with the leather strop to pull any remaining burrs. Pass the leather directly on both edges.
- 11.Run the second skate with at least as many passes as the first skate to keep them with matching heights.
Changing the Grinding Ring
- Move the carrier to a more accessible position in the sharpener
- Open the front door
- Remove the ring retaining nut. It’s a standard thread, lefty loosey.
- Pull the ring off and replace with the correct radius
- If the ring is stuck, it might have a friction fit from the heat, you may have to allow it to cool off a bit before it will slide off. this is more prevalent the more passes the ring has made without cooling down.
- Replace the retaining nut, just finger tight, no need to reef on the nut.
- Close the door.
- Cancel the manual positioning and pickup the sharpening process
